Top 5 Exciting STEM Activities for 2 1/2 to 12 Years

Montessori daycare

In your children’s daycare, STEM activities encourage children to learn about key aspects of everyday life and discover how abstract ideas like math can be transformed into visual objects and games. You do not have to spend a lot of money to promote STEM learning, you simply need to provide some basic items and encourage exciting activities.

  1. Legos and STEM Activities
Legos promote daycare STEM learning in a lot of ways. From counting and sorting the blocks to calculating the number of blocks needed to build something, Lego-style blocks are ideal. Older kids can even learn the basics of plotting and game coding by modeling the blocks into mazes. When it comes to the fields of science, technology, engineering, and math, Lego-style blocks are excellent tools for learning.

  2. Marshmallow Engineering
Toothpicks or pipe cleaners and a bag of marshmallows are the only items necessary to explore building 3-dimensional shapes. Begin with simple engineering exercises like making a house or designing a bridge. Older kids can use colored marshmallows to represent a variety of elements and practice modeling molecular structures.

  3. Jellybean Constellations
As with marshmallows, jellybeans and toothpicks fit well into science and math. Practice modeling the constellations, or creating unique 3-dimensional shapes to see which shapes have more integrity and which fall apart more easily. You can also practice connect-the-dot puzzles in three dimensions for more creative activities.

  4. Paper Airplanes With a few sheets of paper, children can learn to fold many types of paper airplanes, experiment with applied mathematics, aerodynamics, and building fine motor skills as they learn how to make gliders, racers, and planes that just plain won’t fly. Be sure to experiment with things like different wing sizes, adjustable airfoils, and using small weights to change flight patterns.

  5. It’s All Math
Math permeates the world around us. From practical life experiences like setting the table or measuring ingredients to learning about nature or discovering the world of flight, math plays a part in everything we do, even swinging higher on the playground. Because of the prevalence of math in our lives, just about any activity is an opportunity to apply math games.

The list of STEM activities for young children goes far beyond what is listed here. Science makes the world work, technology uses machines and tools to accomplish goals, engineering builds, and math holds it all together.
