How to Nurture Good Kindergartner Citizens

How to Nurture Good Kindergartner Citizens - private kindergarten -Montessori Fremont

One of the advantages of a private kindergarten is the focus that is placed on citizenship. Appropriate behavior is important in any kindergarten, but a Montessori environment takes that a step further, including the principles of Grace and Courtesy in every aspect of the daily educational program.

The Golden Rule

“Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.” This sentence may be one of the most important aspects of teaching private kindergarteners to be good citizens. Once a child understands that their behavior affects others the same way that the behavior would affect them, they are ready to employ empathy as a gauge for the things they do or say. Experts suggest that using the Golden rule at home helps reinforce its importance in outside interactions.

Grace and Courtesy

The principles of Grace and Courtesy are fundamental to Montessori education. They teach such model behaviors as asking for permission, addressing elders as “Sir” or “Ma’am”, and remembering that “Thank you” is the proper way to show gratefulness when it is appropriate. Remember, though, that A child’s entire world is their Montessori classroom, and practicing Grace and Courtesy at home is essential in positive reinforcement.

Guiding Through Communication

Parents are the single most important role model a child will ever have. Through honest communication with your children, you teach them the importance of conveying their feelings in a rational way, solving problems through diplomatic rather than violent methods, and why listening to what other people feel matters. Your children will mimic the behavior they on=bserve from you, so always put your best foot forward.

While your child’s private kindergarten strives to instill model citizenship in each student, the role of parents, who spend more time with the children, cannot be understated. Every opportunity to interact with your children and demonstrate the behavior of a good citizen is another chance to turn your kids into the best people they can be.
