Spring Break Fun in the Bay Area

Spring break ushers in the summer for the Bay Area. Instead of the party spots, families can enjoy mini spring break vacations at places in and around San Francisco. Everything seems to come to life at this time of year, so we have selected a “Life” themed assortment of family-friendly day trips with something for everyone.  Spending time outdoors with hands-on activities is sure to be fun for all.

Life’s a Beach

About an hour north of San Francisco, just off Route 1, Tomales Bay State Park has a range of activities for kids and adults as well. Hearts Desire Beach is one of three visitor destinations in Tomales Bay and is famous for it’s low-wake, kid-friendly waters teeming with tidal biology. The park includes nature trails, kayaking, and a variety of outdoor activities.

The Salty Life

A couple of hours south of San Francisco, the Monterey Bay Aquarium offers a broad look at life under the seas. Just outside the Aquarium, an all-purpose trail allows visitors to enjoy the beaches, watch seals, sea lions, and sea otters at play, or visit world-famous Cannery Row. It may be a longer ride than most forays, but Monterey Bay is an amazing place for learning about sea life and playing in the ocean.

Experience the Wild Life

The San Francisco Zoo offers an exciting time for the whole family. There are more than 2,000 different animals, plus exotic plants, special exhibits, and more. If your family wants to get a little closer to the action, check out Safari West, featuring open-cab safari tours, overnight camping in the park, and a plethora of activities all summer long. If you prefer something a little more in-between, Lindsay Wildlife Experience is a rescue and recovery organization serving native California wildlife. The Wildlife Experience if an educational experience for young children and nature lovers of all ages.

Life in California

In downtown San Francisco, the newly updated Randall Museum is open for business. Geared more towards the younger set, Randall is nestled inside a 16-acre park and features a range of exhibits, including:

·        Geology and Seismic Activity

·        How Railroads Shaped the West

The Sweet Life

Halfway between San Francisco and Sacramento, the Jelly Belly factory offers free tours to the public. The tour is a quarter mile long and includes exhibits, games, and free samples, as well a chocolate and wine experience for the grownups. There’s an amazing Jelly Belly Bean Art gallery, Dining at the Jelly Belly Cafe, and shopping in the Jelly Belly Candy Shop.

As you travel to these locations, look for other exciting places along the way, such as California’s Great America theme park, or the beautiful California State Parks scattered around the region. The important thing is to get out of the house and experience some of what the area has to offer.
